Holidays with the whole family in the Salzkammergut

Family holiday in Austria in the Dachstein-Salzkammergut region

The Dachstein-Salzkammergut region has a lot to offer for families. Children can let off steam in the ice cave, in the family park, on several children's playgrounds in the Salzkammergut or in the Hallstatt Salt mines. This is just a small overview of all the leisure activities that Bad Goisern, Hallstatt and Co. have to offer for parents and children.

Fun for the whole family in Austria

Are you ready for a holiday with the kids in a wonderful family region? Look forward to the numerous family excursion destinations around Landhotel Agathawirt.

Family park "Urzeitwald" in Gosau

In the family park "Urzeitwald" in Gosau, visitors feel as if they are in a land from a bygone era, as they are surrounded by fantastic prehistoric animals such as giant insects, dinosaurs, pterosaurs and mammoths.

A total of 25 adventure stations encourage movement, dexterity and convey interesting facts for young and old in an exciting and entertaining way. The many water games are particularly popular with children in the primeval forest.

Tip: A change of clothes and towels can be useful.

Mountain and fairytale trail Bad Goisern

A unique experience for the whole family is the mountain and fairytale trail in Bad Goisern, which is especially popular on warm summer days. The approximately 1.5 km long but flat trail along the seven legends from the Salzkammergut leads past lovingly carved figures and is also great for children. The trail usually starts at the Rathlucken Hütte car park, immediately after the view to the eternal wall ("Ewige Wand"). From there, the trail leads directly into the mystical forest full of exciting legends and mystical stories.

Tip: Along the Höhen- and Sagenweg you have the option of a stop at a hut and the trail also offers you a fantastic mountain panorama.

Hallstatt Salt Mine

Even the journey to Hallstatt with the panoramic Salzberg cable car to the Hallstatt high valley is an exciting family excursion. There you can catch a panoramic view of the town of Hallstatt, 350 metres below, from the free-floating skywalk. Afterwards, you will enter a distant past - past 1,500 graves with valuable grave goods, a walk-in show tomb and the sites of salt production over 7,000 years ago.

From the miners' house, the tour goes underground on foot, through the mysterious tunnels to the heart of the salt mountain. Here, visitors learn a lot about the "man in the salt", a corpse that was found completely preserved in the salt rock almost 300 years ago. Then - just like the miners used to do - they go down the two miners' slides to the mystical salt lake in no time at all. A true family adventure and perfect for every little (and big) explorer.

Dachstein Giant Ice Cave in Obertraun

The ice palaces in the Dachstein are among the greatest natural wonders of the Alps and are one of the most popular destinations for families. People from all over the world travel to Obertraun - only about 20 km from the Agathawirt in Bad Goisern - to see the underground ice landscape in the Dachstein. Therefore, a trip to the impressive cave glaciers and ice chapels is suitable on hot as well as rainy days.

In the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, specially trained cave guides tell of the secrets of the earth's history that scientists have already been able to unravel. For the guided tours at the Dachstein Krippenstein in the giant ice cave, there is the audio guide 'Hearonymus', which is available in 7 languages for smartphones. Visits to the cave museum in Obertraun are free of charge during operating hours.

After discovering the cave worlds, take the Krippenstein cable car up to over 2000 m, to one of the Dachstein's most impressive attractions - the Dachstein Shark. This can be entered from the inside and is therefore one of the most popular photo motifs on the Dachstein. And what should not be missing in any Salzkammergut holiday is the "5fingers" viewing platform, from which, on a clear day, you can see the small church next to the Agathawirt.
