Old values and traditions are still cherished in the Salzkammergut and throughout the year there are many events and highlights to look forward to.
As winter is less touristy this is a wonderful time to experience “real” Upper Austria and its traditional events, including everything from peaceful Advent to frenzy carnival. In Salzkammergut heritage and tradition blend with modern day culture and amenities.
Among the most popular winter events are:
- Advent markets
- Nativity exhibitions
- Glöcklerläufe (Bell Runs; 5th January)
- Carnival parades (e.g. with the Drum Women on Crazy Monday in Ausseerland)
Curling is hugely popular in the Dachstein-Salzkammergut region and guests are most welcome to join in the fun!
Hallstatt is a great place to visit in winter. Less touristy than in summer, this is the ideal time to explore the town at a leisurely pace and soak up it’s 4000-year old history. The Handicraft House in Bad Goisern and the pretty town of Ischl with its’ modern spa are also well worth a visit.
